Amber Island (Île d’Ambre) is one of the last wild frontiers of Mauritius. Floating just off the northeast coast, this islet is a world of its own—a labyrinth of dense mangroves, rugged volcanic rock, and forgotten ruins. If you are looking to escape the modern world and step back in time, this trail offers a rugged, "Robinson Crusoe" style adventure that feels truly off the beaten path.
The Hike
After a short boat or kayak crossing to reach the island, the trail leads us through a fascinating ecosystem. We wander through salt-resistant mangroves and across sharp volcanic terrain that tells the story of the island's fiery origins. The path uncovers the remnants of French colonial history, including old stone ruins and a forest keeper’s lodge that nature is slowly reclaiming. It is a quiet, atmospheric walk where the only sounds are the rustle of the palm trees and the tide breathing through the mangrove roots.
At the Crater & Coast
Deep within the island’s interior, we discover a hidden sun-dappled crater and several small caves. As we reach the island’s edge, you’ll be greeted by secluded rocky inlets and views of the surrounding turquoise lagoon and distant islets. It’s a place that feels completely untouched by time—a perfect spot to sit on the volcanic shore, enjoy the breeze, and imagine the island as it was centuries ago.
